THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, on Wednesday visited Bat Valley Primary School in Kampala Central Division.
Mrs. Museveni, who is MP for Ruhaama in Ntungamo district, is a member of the parliamentary committee on social services, which is handling a petition by the parents and the school’s management committee.
According to a press statement from State House, Mrs. Museveni was led around the school by the head teacher, Sarah Baziwe, the vice-chairperson of the school management committee, Dr. Boniface Makanga and other officials from the Ministry of Education and KCC.
Last year, the petitioners sought the intervention of Parliament, saying the Asian association, Shree Sanatan Dharma Mandal, wanted to take over the premises of the 70-year-old government-aided Universal Primary Education school.
The community wanted to turn it into a secondary school.
Through the area MP, Erias Lukwago, the petitioners contested the claim of ownership by the community and the school’s relocation, saying the school had neither been a tenant of the Custodian Board nor declared an abandoned property.
“If the relocation succeeds, the petitioners’ interests will be violated. This will also impact negatively on the school’s education programme and the lives of those involved,†the petitioners said.
The school is situated on Kampala-Bombo road.
Kampala district land board officials told the committee on Wednesday that they had approved the association’s lease for 49 years.
However, the Asians assured the committee that the school would not be relocated.
