THE Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) has developed a business guide to enable small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) improve their services. The guide has information about procedures for business registration, licensing and the available finance options.

It also highlights institutions that offer capacity building and how the SMEs can prepare to export products and the organisations they should approach.
The document was presented to stakeholders at a workshop at Hotel Equatoria in Kampala recently.

“SMEs constitute 90% of businesses in Uganda. However, there is gap on where they should go for services and information and there is no specific government institution handling these enterprises,” UIA’s board chairman Patrick Bitature said.

“The companies are also confronted with fierce local and international competition, limited knowledge of available business development services, limited access to information on market opportunities and source of technology.”

“These constraints limit their capacity and efficiency thus undermining their competitiveness on the global market,” Bitature said.
