CONTRARY to popular belief, you do not have to be a sportsman or an elite to drop by a sports store. Some of us begin the year with resolutions for improving our health and fitness but somehow we are bogged down by the prospect of spending thousands of shillings to buy appropriate sports gear.

The good news is, David Katumwa, proprietor of Katumwa Sports Centre, advises that anyone who desires to start fitness exercises had better start small.

“You do not have to wake up and buy a walking machine and a stationary bike just because you resolved to get fit.”
You can start by buying a pair of shorts and a vest or a tracksuit along with a pair of sneakers. All you need to get started is going for walks every morning, then you can advance to bigger exercises.

Shorts, vests, tracksuits cost between sh10,000 and sh50,000 at Katumwa Sports Centre on Ben Kiwanuka Street. The shop also has the 2007 trainers from Nike Air, Adidas and Reebok. They cost sh200,000 per pair but they make fitness enjoyable because they have an air sole that allows someone to bounce and leap at every exertion.

People who are just embarking on fitness routines for the first time can also start by buying two kilogramme home weights.
They are convenient because anyone, can hoist them. You can do a set of five or 10 pumps each while waking, in the bedroom, in the bathroom, in the kitchen and behind the steering wheel before driving.

It is not strenuous at all because it is adjustable to a person’s lifestyle and does not strain the pocket. A two-kilogramme weight costs sh10,000 at the Asiatic Sports Centre.

Katumwa recommends swimming as another low stress exercise that anyone can take up and enjoy, improving his health and fitness without straining his or her body a lot.

Though men can do with swimming in an ordinary boxer short, women need specially made swimming costumes and sometimes headgear to protect their eyes.

In addition to a swim suit, a woman could buy a pair of swimming goggles. Such a set, with costume, goggles, leather and head cap will cost between sh60,000 and sh100,000 altogether at Katumwa. The swimming costumes come in fancy colours and styles, including the famous bikini.

If you have money to spare, then you could invest sh800,000 in a walking machine or a stationary bike from any of the sports shops in town.

The latest walking machines have an option for folding them so that they can be tucked underneath the bed or leaned against the wall after use. Lack of space should not hinder you from buying the equipment.

Altogether, you can spend a few thousand shillings and embark on getting in shape without having to strain your body and pocket.
