Dear Doctor,

I have a terrible cough. I was given amoxicillin and cough syrups, but I did not get any improvement. Now I have chest pain and I produce sputum (phlegm) which is embarrassing. Is this pneumonia or heart disease?

Worried Charles

Dear Charles,
MOST coughs and colds are caused by viruses. They usually last a few days, with symptoms of a running nose, dry cough and throat irritation. One may have a slight temperature rise and feel slightly ill. A virus infection does not need an antibiotic (like amoxicillin).

An antibiotic is only given when the cough is caused by bacteria. The signs may be more serious, with rising temperatures, wet cough, chest pain and others.

A doctor should examine you before prescribing the antibiotic. I do not think you have pneumonia or heart disease, because their symptoms are usually severe. See a doctor if you cough for more than three weeks.
