BEFORE, tabling the Land Amendment Bill before Parliament, the Government should carry out more consultations, the Karamoja parliamentary group has advised.
“Government should constitute a commission of inquiry into the upsurge of new land grabbers that are fencing off the most valuable land in the region,†reads part of a statement the group issued yesterday.
Addressing journalists at Parliament, the group secretary Remigo Achia, said the people of Karamoja requested them to reject section 32B of the proposed law.
The section, according to Achia, talks about a new group of people occupying customary land and wondered who they were.
“With improved security following the disarmament exercise, Karamoja is witnessing an influx of people grabbing land,†he said.
“By December last year, 21 individuals and companies had acquired more than 20% of Karamoja’s land.â€
The MPs asked the Government to de-gazette 64% of the land which was gazetted between 1940 and 1960 because there are no more wild animals on it.
Matheniko MP Abura Sam Pirir (NRM) has threatened to strip naked today if Government tables the Bill in its present form.
