SUNDAY Vision last week ranked him top on Uganda’s wealthiest list, estimating his net worth at $55m (sh93.7b) and counting. He recently stunned the nation when he reportedly dished out $15,000 (sh26m) to Jamaican music stars Brick & Lace to perform at a private party at his Nakasero residence!

We know that he owns a factory in Kabale that processes artemisinin, an anti-malaria drug ingredient, worth $4m. He is chairman MTN Uganda, and Eskom Uganda the South African-hydro electric generating power company (managers of Uganda Electricity Generation Ltd) among countless other business interests.

But if that sounds big, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Snoops reveal that Charles Mbire is currently courting Ecobank, the leading independent regional banking Group in West and Central Africa, serving wholesale and retail customers in over 20 countries. Last week, Mbire reportedly invited and hosted the president of EcoBank who came along with his entourage to his private residence in Nakasero.

The group reportedly met the Bank of Uganda governor and officials from Uganda Investment Authority. If and when EcoBank, which is already in Rwanda and Kenya, finally establishes itself in Uganda, Mbire, who is their front man and latent shareholder, will probably be their chairman. We are talking about an institution with a capitalisation of up to $65b!

EcoBank provided the $100,000 (sh172m) that Tanzanian housemate Richard recently won on Big Africa 11.
