A MULTI-MILLION dollar factory that will manufacture eight million mosquito nets annually for East Africa was launched in Arusha, Tanzania, over the weekend.

Olyset Net Factory is a joint venture between Japanese multi-national company, Sumitomo Chemical, and Arusha-based A-Z Textile Mills. Dr. Ali Mohammed Shein, Tanzania’s vice-president, presided over the dedication of the factory.

The manufacturers say unlike insecticide- treated nets where the chemicals are glued to the outside, the Olyset net will have the insecticide incorporated into the fibre, giving it a life-span of five years.

The nets are approved by the World Health Organisation.

“The Olyset nets will cost about $5 (sh8,550) on average, which is competitive with those imported from Asia,” Kalpesh Shah, the financial director of A-Z Textiles, said.

The Tanzanian government supported the project through provision of infrastructure like roads, water and power at a cost of $2.5m (sh4.5b) in the Export Processing Zone in Arusha.

Hiromasa Yonekura, the president of Sumitomo Chemicals, said the joint venture was an expansion of a business relationship that commenced with a royalty-free technology transfer in 2003.
