HOCKEY players have been challenged to beat the world’s best after the Lugogo synthetic hockey pitch was handed over to them after two years of construction.

“I am glad to see that what started as a dream is now a reality. We now have no scapegoat of the poor ground when we take on other countries. Take on the best and beat them,” said Uganda Olympic Committee president Maj. Gen. Francis Nyangweso of the sh446m pitch.

The facility was constructed by contributions from the Olympic Solidarity, international hockey body, government and well-wishers.

State sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, commissioner for sports Dan Tamwesigire, National Council of Sports general secretary Jasper Aligawesa and hockey fans were present at the hand-over function, performed by International Hockey Federation board member Theo Yekama on Tuesday. Bakkabulindi noted that this was a landmark in the sporting history of the game.

“We should guard our carpet so jealously. Let us go out and prove that we can utilise it effectively so that we develop more talent,” said Bakkabulindi.
