BY his own admission, he was the biggest eastern Uganda PAM award artiste last year and simply waited for his crowning at the grand ceremony at the Lugogo Oval.

As it transpired, however, the accolade eluded Via Kalikwani. His song, Tolofina, sung with Welsh girlfriend, Sharon Webb, lost out to Philippe Emuli’s Magara Gangye. Was his musical journey to stall after all the effort injected last year?

Not likely for the 27-year-old kayaker- turned musician, it was a real eye-opener. On his recent trip to the UK, he sought out famed Ugandan musical duo Da Twinz with whom he recently released two catchy dance hall tracks, Toloba and Balamu Bange. That the two songs are his best efforts thus far is not debatable.

Unlike Tolofina which was better listened to, Toloba and Balamu Bange have ingredients of the ‘party style’.
But for the genre he uses, there is plenty of lyrical inspiration, especially in Balamu Bange. In the song, Kalikwani uses a well- known kisoga call that chastises lazy men whose food consumption at funerals triples their condolence fees.

In Toloba, he attacks contract marriages.
Currently based in South Africa, Kalikwani promises to record more songs to complete a 12-track album.
