PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has invited Pope Benedict XVI to visit Uganda.

Museveni extended the invitation while receiving the new Apostolic Nuncio (Pope’s representative) to Uganda, Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam, at State House Entebbe on Friday. The Nuncio, a South Korean, conveyed greetings from the Pope to the people of Uganda.

According to a press statement from State House, Museveni hailed the good relations between the Vatican and Uganda.

Two popes have been to Uganda in the past three decades. Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II visited in 1969 and 1993 respectively.

Tschang, who replaces Christophe Pierre, congratulated Museveni for successfully hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in November 2007.

The President also received letters of credence from five other envoys. Among them was the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner, Patrick Edwards, who is opening the Caribbean country’s diplomatic mission in Uganda. Trinidad and Tobago hosts the next Commonwealth summit.

The new French ambassador, Rene Forceville, commended the President for creating a peaceful environment conducive for national development.

The other new envoys that were also received at State House were; Keiichi Kato of Japan, Sun Heping of China and Amadou Kebe of Senegal.
