No red roses for Valentines

SAUDI ARABIA-The religious police banned red roses for Valentine’s Day, forcing couples in the Muslim nation to think of new ways to show their love. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and prevention of Vice ordered florists and gift shop owners in the capital Riyadh to remove any items coloured scarlet, which is widely seen as symbolising love. The day passed with couples fearing to wear red and end up in prison. Saudi Arabia has an austere form of Sunni Islam, which prevents unrelated men and women from mixing and bans women from driving.

600 couples in Valentine nuptials

MEXICO-Nearly 600 Mexican couples tied the knot in a mass Valentine’s Day wedding by the US border last Thursday, many of them migrants who met while working illegally in the United States. As a live band blasted out sugary Mexican love songs, a judge simultaneously married a crowd of couples whose ages ranged from 16 to 65. More than three-quarters were migrants returning from, or trying to get into, the United States.
