THE New Vision and Stanbic Bank yesterday launched the fourth edition of the annual Woman Achiever award.

The award will go to a woman who has gone an extra mile to improve the livelihood of people with special needs. The award is in line with this year’s Women’s Day theme: “The role of women in transforming society to achieve development.”

A panel of judges will choose the best three from the top 10 women nominated. The overall winner will receive a prize worth sh5m, while the first and second runner-up will get sh1m and sh500,000 respectively.

The awards will coincide with the International Women’s Day on March 8. The best 10 women will receive certificates of recognition and their inspiring stories will be published in The New Vision.

Speaking at the launch of the award at The New Vision headquarters in Kampala, the features editor, Catherine Mwesigwa, noted that women play a vital role in society.

“We started this project three years ago to recognise women who are contributing to national development in different areas.

Many times when recognising heroes, the ordinary women are left out. We need to spearhead their cause for development,” Mwesigwa said.

She thanked Stanbic Bank for supporting the project, which, she said, had grown bigger and more competitive.

“The award does not only empower these women, but also sets an example to other women to do something for their communities,” Mwesigwa said.
“This fits in well with our core values,” commented Daniel Nsibambi of Stanbic Bank.

“We believe it’s a noble cause to focus on people in society, especially as part of our corporate social responsibility,” added Sonia Karamagi, the bank’s marketing officer.

All The New Vision readers can participate in the nomination by sending a woman’s name, her telephone number, contact address, her location, what she does and reasons for their choice.

Nominations should be sent before February 27 to The New Vision, Features Desk, P.O. Box 9815, Kampala, or on email women@newvision.co.ug or to Fax 235843.
