EDITOR — A national flag is a unique symbol of sovereignty, recognition and pride of a country. In Uganda, the national flag is more abused than honoured. The flag can commonly be seen in many places with the colours not in order, or even upside down. (The correct arrangement is black, yellow, red).

There should be protocol in the display, hoisting and lowering of national flags. For example, national flags are flown at half-mast during a time of distress.
In some places, the Ugandan flag is flown with faded colours, moreover made out of cheap material.

Recently, at around 5:30pm near a branch of the Centenary Bank, Kampala, one such flag was being lowered by a security guard, with no deserving honour. After that, he crumpled it up before carrying it away!

It is most likely that many Ugandans do not know the significance of the national flag. This used to be taught in formal schools, military or Police academies. Ugandans need to be reminded to treat their national flag with honour.
