KAMPALA - The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has asked the Government to investigate the brutal killing of journalist, Rebecca Wilbrod Kasujja. Kasujja, 32, was raped and killed by unknown men last week on her way to work at Buwama FM, a community radio near Kampala. “We condemn this shocking attack, which underscores the danger that journalists face in Africa,” said Gabriel Baglo, the director of the federation’s Africa office. The motive for the murder is unclear, but colleagues believe it was related to Kasujja’s work.

Avemar sale ruling today

KAMPALA - The Commercial Court will today hear an application for an injunction to block the sale of properties of businessman Joseph Behakaninra to recover sh4.7b he owes Barclays Bank. Earlier, the registrar, Henry Haduli, issued interim order in which the bank agreed not to dispose of Behakanira’s assets prior to hearing the application. Early this month, Barclays took control of BETUCO (U) Ltd, Avemar Shopping Centre and several developed prime plots of land owned by Behakanira. The Bank gave him until March 14, to clear the debt and associated costs or the property be sold. However, Behakanira through his lawyer said the demands could only arise in 2013.

EC to display voters’ list

KAMPALA - The Electoral Commission has set February 25 and March 16, as the dates for displaying the voters’ register and issuing of cards in Bukomansimbi county in Masaka. The chairman of the commission, Badru Kiggundu,said the exercise was in preparation for the by-election of MP and LC5 councilor for people with disabilities.

Govt given 7 days

KAMPALA - The High Court has given the Attorney General seven days to produce documents detailing the alleged transfer of the Kabaka’s land at Mutungo and Luzira hills. Kabaka Mutesa II’s children sued the Government claiming the lands registry falsely transferred their mailo land at Mutungo and Luzira. Prince Wassajja, Princesses Dorothy Nassolo and Sarah Kagere are seeking over sh190b in compensation. Justice Moses Mukiibi is hearing the case.

Media council head elected

KAMPALA - The Rev. Fr. John Mary Waliggo has been re-elected chairperson of the Media Council. His deputy is Dr. Goretti Nassanga, a lecturer at Makerere University. Other members are Dr. Katebalirwe Amooti, Beatrice Were, James Walugembe of Bukedde, Paul Ekochu, Lina Zedriga, Kawooya Mwebe, Wafula Oguttu and Paul Mukasa.
