ABOUT sh58m was recently raised in both cash and pledges at a fundraising luncheon for Nkumba University Development Programmes.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Senteza Kajjubi, explained that the fund-raising was intended to complete Kintu Building, named after the founder, the late Erisa Kintu Salongo. Kajjubi said the building, which is already roofed, now requires sh450m to complete.

He added that the fundraising was necessary as it will reduce the burden of forcing management from raising tuition fees. “If we are to depend on fees for our developments all the time, it will be very difficult for the parents and guardians,” Kajjubi said.

The university was celebrating its 56th anniversary since its formation as a kindergarten in February 1952. It became a university in 1994.

Kajjubi assured students that they should not regret having failed to join government universities because Nkumba can provide all they need to become responsible citizens. He added that Nkumba is one of the three only chartered universities in the country.

The others are Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi and Uganda Christian University Mukono
Kajjubi further explained that Nkumba is a unique university because it does not belong to any religious sector or NGO, but a community university, which managed to get a charter in a record time of only 13years.

Meanwhile, the guest of honour, Gordon Wavamunno, lamented about institutions which are opened up for the sole purpose of making money. “Students and parents will not benefit at all,” he said.
