THE two-acre piece of land that Akii-Bua stadium is built on has been given to Lira Hospital for expansion, MPs heard yesterday.

The Hospital superintendent Jane Aceng told MPs on the Public Accounts Committee that the stadium land was given to the hospital by the District Local Government authorities in 2006.

Akii Bua stadium will be shifted to where the airstrip used to be, after it is also moved to a more suitable ground.
“The land was allocated to us for expansion purposes. However we have not received official documents because the town clerk said it had some legal complications,” Aceng said.

The stadium was named after Uganda’s 1972 Olympic gold medalist John Akii-Abua.

Aceng was appearing before the committee to answer queries raised by the Auditor General for the financial year 2006.

The commissioner for Sports Dan Tamwesigire was stunned to hear the development: “I have not heard of that information. Don’t they (Lira Hospital) know that it’s a sports ground?”
