OVER 250 Fort Portal Hospital (Buhinga) medical workers live in dilapidated houses, MPs heard yesterday.

The medical superintendent, Dr. Abdallah Shaban, told the public accounts committee that the workers, mainly nurses, live in uniports.

“The quarters the staff live in are not worth to be called houses. Actually, they are condemned,” he said.

Appearing before the committee chaired by Reagan Okumu (FDC) to answer queries in the Auditor General’s report for the 2005/2006 financial year, Shaban blamed the Ministry of Health for failing to release capital development to regional hospitals.

According to him, last financial year, the Ministry of Finance released sh8b as capital development to 11 regional referral hospitals but the money has not yet reached the beneficiaries.
He said the hospital lacked X-ray equipment.

“We have no ambulance to transport patients to Mulago. It is always in the garage. Those who need X-ray services are referred to private clinics,” he said.

MP Stephen Kaliba (NRM) accused Shaban’s team of negligence, saying there were allegations that drugs disappear from the hospital stores.
