KAKIRA Sugar Works is to increase the amount of power generated to 23.5MW from 12MW. Due to the increase, the company will sell 12MW to the national grid and also increase the hours of electricity sales to the grid to 24 from 18.

At the beginning of this year, the company applied to the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) for a modification of its licence and received a go-ahead.

“The authority has approved the application for the amendment and intends to modify the licence,” read a public notice put up by ERA, calling for any presentation or objection to the request. The previous licence allowed Kakira to generate 12MW.

In 2006, the Government signed a co-generation agreement with Kakira to supply power to the national grid for 18 hours per day. The factory started supplying power to the grid last year.
It uses sugarcane waste (bagasse) for generation of the electricity.
Falling water levels of Lake Victoria and increasing demand have pushed Uganda into a power deficit.

Two years ago, the Government came up with measures to bridge the gap. In the medium-term, the Government has embarked on construction of the 250MW Bujagali hydro-power project, which is expected to be completed in 2011.

Also, the Government has entered into co-generation arrangements with Kilembe Mines, which is to supply 2.3MW to the grid for 24 hours a day. Others are mini-hydro projects of Waki (5MW) and Bugoye (13MW) for which a Norwegian power company, Troenderenergi, has finalised the feasibility study. Construction is expected to start in June.
