ONE of the finest and popular materials to use for compound landscaping, is concrete. “Today’s concrete on top of being durable, is gorgeously finished with decorative accents and paint. Concrete finishing is now the way to go for pavements, architectural structures, foundations and parking yards in homes,” explained Stuart Kwikiriza, the production supervisor at Kwality Concretes on Ggaba Road.

Concrete is commonly used as block designs on walkways and paths. Concrete blocks can be used in place of or in combination with bricks and stones and when used with mortar or cement, it makes more durable structures. There are so many shapes, textures and style of concrete blocks.

The material is giving builders and property developers new, cost-effective and beautiful options for building.

Concrete blocks are flexible and can be made locally, which is vital especially in places where stones are not readily available.

It is because of these reasons that concrete block usage in construction is on the increase.

At Kwality Concretes, they make solid or hollow blocks, pavers, balustrades, road curb-stones and slubs.

“Our concrete blocks are a mixture of cement, fine and course aggregate materials and a very small amount of water. One concrete block is equivalent to four standard bricks, which enables quicker construction work. We have had our concrete blocks tested and approved by the ministry of works for reliability and strength,” Kwikiriza said.

For an attractive walk-way or compound, the use of pavers can make a whole world of difference because of their creative designs.

At Kwality Concretes, they have two types of pavers; the double tee (80mm thickness) and the rectangular pavers (60mm) that are appropriate for outdoors and come in a variety of colours including blue, grey and brown.

For storied buildings, they have hollow blocks that can be inserted in between partitions during construction. They are light and help hold the partitions together.

“To make the concrete last even longer, many customers are going in for interlocking pavers. And because pavers are outdoors, we also recommend regular cleaning – either giving them a manual scrubbing with water and a detergent or with a sealer (essential for areas around swimming pools),” said Edward Kato, a supervisor at Concrete Definers in Ndeeba.
