THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) is backing Patrick Mwondha, the Uganda People’s Congress candidate contesting for the Bukhooli North parliamentary seat.

“We don’t want to waste resources on a person who will not win.

“After failing to identify capable candidates, FDC decided to support candidates for other opposition parties in the by-elections for Bukomansimbi and Bukhooli,” the party’s deputy spokesperson, Toterebuka Tibamwenda, said yesterday.

“We made a mistake in the Kalungu by-elections and the opposition lost. We want to join our efforts and get victory for the opposition.”

Seven candidates were nominated to contest for the Bukhooli North parliamentary seat in Bugiri district. They are Mwondha, Stephen Bakka Mugabi (NRM) and Asuman Basalirwa (JEEMA).

Others are Rachael Kagoya (Democratic Party), Mohammed Gowa (Forum for Integrity in Leadership) and independents John Onyango Okech and Aminsi Kaziba. The seat fell vacant when the court nullified Asuman Balingirila Nakendo’s election for lack of academic qualifications.

In Bukomansimbi, the seat fell vacant after the court nullified Hajji Kisiki Lubyayi’s election for lack of academic papers.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 6 and 7 as the dates for nominating the candidates for the by-elections.

The two-day exercise, which will start at 9:00am, ends at 5:00, EC chairman Badru Kiggundu said.
