MAKERERE University’s Immaculate Chemutai and Patrick Cheptoek took the individual honours at the MTN sponsored national University Cross Country championships. However, they could not match Ndejje’s team work, as they lifted both the men and women titles at Uganda Martyrs University, Nkonzi on Saturday.

Chemutai, who finished fourth at the national cross country championships in Soroti, broke away from the chasing pack with about 3km to go and never looked back.

“It was a good course but not so much competition. There was no slope at least and it made running much faster,” Chemutai said after the race.
Despite his win, Cheptoek cursed the many hills, most especially in the 2km event.

“They made finishing look so hard. It’s good I won,” he said.

The Makerere students only made it to the venue courtesy of well-wishers and personal initiative. The university authorities did not facilitate them like the other eight universities in the competition. Some sympathisers offered vehicles to carry the athletes to the Nkozi venue.

The event was the calendar opener for the NUSFU sports activities that are sponsored by MTN.
