THE Uganda Christian University (UCU) students’ guild has set aside sh15m to help the needy students who lack tuition fees.

Addressing the media at the university in Mukono last Wednesday, guild president Ganzi Muhanguzi said the project is dubbed ‘Guild Students Fund (GST)’.
He said the fund targets mainly finalists, to ensure that they complete their studies.

A committee will be formed to supervise the funds, Muhanguzi said, adding that the committee will consist of students from all the faculties. Needy students will apply for the scholarships through the committee.

Muhanguzi said the selection of needy students will be done objectively such that students who misuse their tuition fees do not exploit the opportunity to access the funds.

He said partial scholarships worth sh200,000 will be given to needy Ugandan students and $100 to foreign students.

Muhanguzi said 75 students will benefit from the fund in the first phase. He added that sh4.6m on the fund was raised from a bazaar the guild organised in January, and sh10.4m was got from the guild budget.

He said the fund is the first of its kind to be initiated in a Ugandan university.

To ensure continuity of the fund, Muhanguzi said the administration will be involved in monitoring it.

“We are also going to make a law to ensure that the guild contributes sh10m per semester to the fund,” Muhanguzi announced.
