MANAFWA
The demand for education in the two-year-old district has forced teachers to start using trees for staffrooms. With funds not being enough to put up more buildings, Sinkayi Valley School, a private school in the town outskirts, has resolved to let the pupils take on the buildings, while teachers shelter under trees. “There is so little we can do. We are still building more structures and our land is also limited,†said Nicholas Bwayo, the headteacher of the school that started in 2000.

Uganda Management Institute graduands have been asked to provide solutions to the challenges the country faces. Speaking at the institute’s graduation ceremony recently, the Chancellor, Florence Mugasha, said: “We expect you to turn your newly reformatted minds to the challenges facing this country so that either alone, or in partnership with others, you generate solutions to improve the conditions of our people.†A total of 923 received degrees, diplomas and certificates.

Leaders of the teachers union in the district should get their members to learn to save, the sports state minister has advised. Charles Bakkabulindi was speaking at the launch of the union at the Manafwa Red Cross offices recently. He said it was disturbing that teachers who used to be an example to others were now a laughing stock. “It was teachers’ children who used to have a good education, but the tide has changed,†he lamented. The union also attracted members from Bududa and Mbale.
Seat of Wisdom gets lab

Seat of Wisdom SS, Kasawo has received a modern science lab worth sh250m. Fr. Commissioning the lab last week, Fr. John Ssenkooto, the chaplain, said the lab block was funded by teachers’ savings.
