A family of five on Sunday survived being burnt to death when bodaboda cyclists set their house ablaze. The incident occurred at 11:00pm at Semu Katebarirwe’s home at Mihambo village in Itendero, Bushenyi district.

Several property, including mattresses and books, was burnt to ashes.

Katebarirwe and his family escaped unhurt on hearing the sound of the motorcycles in his compound.

“They were many but we escaped from the house and hid in the banana plantation,” Katebarirwe said.

He narrated that the group was led by a man whom he heard being asked: “Afande tukore tutya, (sir, what should we do?)

According to the Police, the cyclists suspected that Katebarirwe’s son, Justus Mubangizi, was involved in the murder of their colleague, Sekatawa, on March 5.

That night, a passenger hired Sekatawa from Itendero stage and his body was recovered in the bush the following morning.

The district Police commander, Peter Onyura, said Mubangizi was arrested to help them in the investigations.

“It is unfortunate that the bodaboda cyclists wanted to kill the whole family yet the suspect is under our custody.”

He warned that whoever was involved in the arson would be arrested and prosecuted.

Katebarirwe appealed to the Government to help him reconstruct his house.
