ASHFORDS Solicitors in the UK, Exmouth and St. Marylebone Rotary Clubs recently donated English Common Law text books to Makerere University law students.
The books, worth sh4m, were handed over to the university main library by the former president of the Rotary Club of Muyenga, Samuel Mwanje.
Dr. Sylvia Tamale, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, thanked the Rotarians for the donation, saying the books would be kept in the cage section of the Law Library.
“These books are a very big pillar in law because most of the contract laws of Uganda are based on Common Law,†she said.
Tamale said although online libraries are ideal, Uganda’s load shedding problems are handled best with the use of hard copies. The university librarian, Dr. Maria Musoke said: “This has been the first donation of this magnitude in a few years.â€
She said most books on Common Law had been misused and the remaining few copies were only available for photocopy. “Some of the books had missing pages, but with these new books, we shall ensure that they are kept well and used by all the students,†she added.
