A SUSPECTED arsonist yesterday attacked Kawempe South MP Ssebuliba Mutumba’s residence in Nangabo, Wakiso district, burnt his car and part of the house.

The fire that started in the garage burnt household property and a Suzuki Escudo beyond repair.

According to Mutumba’s wife, Lydia, the fire started at around 1:30am, as they slept. Lydia, who has a newly- born baby, was the one using the burnt car. No one was injured in the attack.

“We were awakened by a huge fire in the garage. We raised an alarm and neighbours came to our rescue. Together, we were able to put out the fire but the damage had already been done,” she said yesterday.
Lydia believes the arsonist tampered with the power supply system before carrying out the act.

Mutumba attributed the act to “bad-hearted” people. “It was the work of an arsonist,” said the MP, who was busy in Parliament for most of the day.
The Kasangati Police chief, Meriton Muhimbura and his team visited the scene yesterday afternoon and interrogated Lydia.

The deputy Police fire brigade chief, Lawrence Adima, told The New Vision that the MP did not contact them about the incident.

Meanwhile, another fire gutted Mutaasa Kafeero building in Kampala on Wednesday night.
