Pece War Memorial stadium in Gulu needs sh4m to protect it from lightning strikes that are a menace in the area and killed two pupils last week.

Gulu mayor, Christopher Acire donated sh1m for the local government to install lightning arrestors at the stadium.

The mayor made the donation during a memorial service organised by Gulu Municipality and district authorities in remembrance of primary school kids and teachers who were struck by lightening last Thursday.

Two primary school kids were killed and 33 injured during a Gulu Municipality athletics meet.

Acire added that more money is also needed to plant an inner perimeter fence to bar spectators from interrupting sports events.

Gulu acting district Sports Officer, Otto Aldo-Okot blamed government for abandoning and leaving the management and maintenance of the stadium to Gulu local government but with limited resources.

The stadium produced legendary track stars Judith Ayaa and John Akii-Bua and is the second largest track and field venue in the country.
It is now in a sorry state and few national events are held there these days.
