IT is not everyday that you find an Anglican choir ministering in a Roman Catholic Church. But last Sunday was not your usual Sunday at Christ the King Church. Apart from being Palm Sunday, Namirembe Cathedral Choir was invited to perform in the church by their counterparts, Christ the King Church Choir.

The two choirs put up a spectacular Easter concert. Mildred Warugaba of Christ the King Church said their relationship with Namirembe Cathedral started in 1986 when they performed at Rubaga Cathedral. They later performed at Kabaka Mutebi’s wedding at Namirembe Cathedral in 1999.

The Namirembe Cathedral Chamber Orchestra accompanied Christ the King Church Choir during its Christmas concert at Sheraton Hotel, last year.

Palm Sunday’s concert was another step in cementing the relationship. The show featured classical pieces, hymns and songs by traditional African musical composers. The classical pieces included Mozart’s Kyrie Eleison, William Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus and Wesley’s Blessed be the Lord.

Although the music was somber, the message that Jesus saved the world through his passion, death and resurrection was clear.

Wassaanyi Sserukenya’s traditional compositions, Ssimumanyi and Yesu Vamuvamba, a rhythmic piece from Kenya captured the admiration of the audience.

The high trebles of the choir boys from Namirembe wowed the audience.
Organist Paul Luggya, choral conductors Paul Ssekibaala, Patrick Mberenge and Andrew Ssengendo Zaake spiced up the show.
