TORO Kingdom prime minister (Omuhikirwa) Stephen Irumba has resigned. He gave his resignation letter to King Oyo Nyimba during an Orukurato (parliament) meeting at Mucwa in Fort Portal on Saturday.

Irumba cited intrigue among kingdom officials, particularly the palace, saying they had usurped his powers.

He claimed that some people within the kingdom had blocked him from swearing-in the ministers that were nominated last year. A total of 22 ministers were approved by the Orukurato but they were not sworn-in.

“I did not get the required support from the palace. As a result, my work to serve the kingdom became hard. Some people went on to make false allegations against me,” Irumba’s letter said.

“These very people do not respect the kingdom constitution and also do not follow the traditions of the kingdom.”

Irumba said at the climax of his problems, he reported the matter to President Yoweri Museveni, a guardian to King Oyo, to intervene and restore peace. He added that he had spent a lot of personal funds on the activities of the kingdom.

In a related development, the Orukurato has elected three new kingdom regents.
They are the Rev. Richard Baguma, George Nyakairu and Justine Bakahumura.

Nyakairu hails from Kabarole, Baguma from Kyenjojo while Bakahumura comes from Kamwenge. They replaced Isaya Kalya, Prof. Oswald Ndolerire and Zaveriyo Byabagambi, who were recently sacked for allegedly not respecting the Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and failing to perform their duties.

Oyo is slated to swear-in the new regents on Tuesday. The regents are supposed to help the young king run the kingdom until he makes 18 years.
