THE Omukama of Toro, Oyo Nyimba, has appointed William Nyakatura as the acting prime minister of Toro Kingdom. Nyakatura, a former minister in the NRM government between 1986 and 1989, was appointed on Tuesday at the Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal.

He held portfolios of state minister of animal industry and fisheries and that of labour. After the announcement, Nyakatura was later sworn-in by Fort Portal magistrate Godfrey Bindeba.

After taking the oath, Nyakatura prostrated before Oyo and kissed his palms. Nyakatura, the head of the Abasumbi clan, is also a former member of the Kabarole district service commission. The Toro Rukurato (parliament) will approve Nyakatura’s appointment next month.

Nyakatura replaces Steven Irumba, who resigned on Saturday, citing intrigue among some kingdom officials, especially those from the palace.

He claimed that the officials had blocked him from swearing in ministers he appointed last year.

New regents were also sworn in on Tuesday at the Karuzika palace. The three regents, who were appointed by King Oyo on Saturday, were Rev Richard Baguma, George Nyakairu and Justine Bakahumura.

The function was witnessed by the king and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa.
On behalf of the regents, Rev Baguma said they would strive to unite the different factions in the kingdom and ensure that conflicts are solved.

The regents help the young king to run the kingdom until he is 18 years old. Oyo is now 16, having assumed the throne when he was four.
