Latigo, Ochora get sh1b from govt

A GROUP of 21 farmers in Amuru district, including the leader of the opposition in Parliament, Prof Ogenga Latigo, and senior army officers, have received sh1b to promote commercial farming.

A GROUP of 21 farmers in Amuru district, including the leader of the opposition in Parliament, Prof Ogenga Latigo, and senior army officers, have received sh1b to promote commercial farming.
The other beneficiaries are the 2nd Division commander, Brig. Otema Awany, Gulu resident district commissioner Col. Walter Ochora and former Nwoya MP Zachary Olum.
According to Ochora, the group had asked the Government for sh4b but it gave them sh1b, with a promise to continue supporting them.
“Leaders should show how people with different beliefs and political ideologies can work together. We have formed the Amuru district commercial farmers’ association headed by Olum who is a DP, FDC’s Latigo, Alice Onegi Obel, Otema and myself,†said Ochora.
Amuru LC5 chairman Anthony Atube said the group would promote commercial farming in the district as part of the larger programme to develop the war-ravaged Acholi sub-region.
The money will be channeled through the district, noted the vice-chairman, Okello Oryema. He added that the technical committee had approved the opening of a bank account for that purpose.
“The Government looks at successful farmers as role models who will assist the community in opening-up their land, give them seeds and other farm implements,†said Oryema.
A few weeks ago, state minister for northern Uganda, David Wakikona, told a meeting in Gulu that he had forwarded a list of prosperous farmers in Amuru to President Museveni.
