Six soldiers, policeman arrested over robbery

SIX soldiers, a policeman and two private security guards have been arrested over armed robbery in different parts of the country. Privates Emmanuel Abeko and Jackson Odoki, are being held over a February 14 robbery in which a Chinese, Wang Feng Jai, lost over sh30m.

SIX soldiers, a policeman and two private security guards have been arrested over armed robbery in different parts of the country. Privates Emmanuel Abeko and Jackson Odoki, are being held over a February 14 robbery in which a Chinese, Wang Feng Jai, lost over sh30m.

The suspects allegedly connived with James Owiny, Wang’s guard, to rob him as he returned to his home in Bugolobi, a city suburb, at about 10:00pm.

Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga yesterday said Muzamilu Etwopu, Michael Komakech, Lameck Okello and Martin Olwoo, a guard, were also arrested over the same incident.
A gun and 29 bullets were recovered, he added.

In a related development, Patrick Mutabazi, attached to the 39th Battalion, was nabbed on March 4 as he allegedly tried to sell a gun to an undercover security officer.

Mutabazi wrapped the gun, which had 20 bullets, in newspapers and proceeded to Kabowa, a Kampala suburb, where he wanted to sell the items at sh800, 000, Nsubuga told journalists at the Rapid Response Unit headquarters in Kireka.

On March 9, two other soldiers were arrested as the Police foiled a suspected robbery attempt on the Jinja-Kampala road.

Privates Raymond Draleti and Cheptegei attached to Njeru army detachment reportedly waylaid a vehicle from Kenya and demanded money from the driver.
A gun and 24 bullets were recovered.
In Hoima district, Henry Baguma, a soldier attached to Bombo army headquarters, was arrested on February 22 as he allegedly tried to sell a pistol.

In Wakiso district, James Kizza of Wakiso was also arrested as he allegedly tried to sell a pistol at sh500,000 in Kasangati.
In a related development, John Martin Omoro, a Police constable, is being detained over a robbery in which thugs waylaid a bus at Kitosi on the Masindi-Hoima road and robbed passengers.

David Busoborwa, Brain Wonda and Steven Amati allegedly stripped all the passengers and shot in the air as they took off with various items. The Police recovered a gun and 23 bullets.

In Kapchorwa, Stanley Mangusho was arrested over illegal possession of a gun, while Patrick Toppi was accused of armed robbery.

In Jinja district, James Muhanguzi and Wilson Kiboigo, who allegedly robbed a bodaboda cyclist at gun point in Bugembe, are also under detention.
The Kampala Extra Police spokesman said the suspects would appear before the General Court Martial.
