DEAR Total Man
My wife has a problem that is disgusting me. It began during sex, when her vagina would make farting noises. I would have ignored it because the ‘farts’ don’t smell but even outside the bedroom, when she is seated with others, she ‘farts’. Many think it is a real fart but she swears to me it is her vagina. What can we do to stop this?

Dear Friend,
What you are describing is not an abnormal condition. It is even more common among women than you can imagine. It is called Flatus vaginalis, which is air coming from the vagina during or after intercourse. It is not like a buttocks fart.

It is like air squeezing its way out of a small opening – like you can ‘fart’ out of your mouth.

During sex, the vagina and the uterus move, creating more air space. Air is also pumped in by the penis moving in and out. In some positions like doggy style this may happen quite easily. Often, the "fart" occurs when this air has to escape or when the walls of the vagina and uterus return to their previous positions. But, as you said, is odourless.

It can also happen when air gets into the vagina during arousal, normal exercise, certain sports or certain sitting styles.
In Buganda, it is associated with the post-delivery condition, hollow privates and improper sitting manners. But there is no scientific study to confirm this.

But whatever the reason, it is not harmful. Some people may find this embarrassing, but it is no big deal when you are both able to laugh about it. It can be great fun if you both understand why it's happening.

In fact, I know many men who love it because it is an indication that your woman has a very active vagina. Many men would kill for this.

There is nothing to prevent it entirely. But if you really wish to do away with it, you can advise her to do regular kegel exercises which entail tightening the muscles that she uses to stop the flow of urine.

Let her practice several times a day when she goes to the toilet or even when she is sitting at work or in the taxi. They will help her develop a stronger pelvic muscle which will slightly change the shape inside because it will become slightly larger.

But, the bottom line is to get used and adjust to it. Turn it into fun and try not to let it interfere with your enjoyment of sex. Sex should never be perceived as embarrassing because this will affect arousal and fidelity.
