MOSES Kipsiro has played down the favourite tag as he seeks his first World Cross Country medal in Edinburgh, Scotland this Sunday. After beating last year’s winner Zersenay Tadese in Spain recently, Kipsiro, who has been on a high altitude training in Kapchorwa, is regarded as the dark horse to clinch the title in the 36th edition. But the soft-spoken runner played down the suggestion.

“I will try my best. I pray to God that I get a good result,” he said before the senoir and junior mens’ teams flew out to Edinburgh yesterday.

The world 5000m bronze medallist will face off with the greatest cross country runner of all time, Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele, who will be seeking a sixth title and make up for a disastrous race last year that Tadese won.

In the build-up to his title defence, 26-year-old Tadese was not only beaten by Bekele in Edinburgh but also by Uganda’s rising star, Kipsiro. Both men recorded the same time at the Cross Internacional de Italica, in Seville, on January 20.

However, the world champion did win at the Cinque Mulini in San Vittore Olona in February, but neither Bekele nor Kipsiro took part in the race.

Kipsiro missed the World Indoor Championships in Valencia to concentrate on Edinburgh.
