How long will I take to heal after circumcision?

CIRCUMCISION is a ‘minor’ operation, which when done well, gives few problems. The operation may take about half-an-hour and you will be given some anaesthesia so that you do not feel the actual cut.

Dear Doctor,

I am considering going for circumcision to protect myself against HIV. However, I am worried of the time (and the pain) it takes to recover. I am a Second Year student at university. It is difficult to get lots of time just sitting and waiting to heal. How long would it take?
Dick

Dear Dick,
CIRCUMCISION is a ‘minor’ operation, which when done well, gives few problems. The operation may take about half-an-hour and you will be given some anaesthesia so that you do not feel the actual cut.

Afterwards, you can take pain killers and stay at home for one or two days. After that, you can start working or studying (with care) and by the end of two weeks, you should be completely healed and pain-free.

Circumcision has been said to give some protection against HIV. For that reason, it is recommended that all men should be circumcised. Talk to a doctor about how best to arrange for it.
