THE Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), through the National Curriculum Development Centre, has chosen new French books for A’Level for the academic year 2009-2013.
In a circular to heads of secondary schools offering French, Matthew Bukenya, UNEB’s executive secretary, said the incoming S5 French students should begin studying the new books. UNEB will set exams based on the books.
The books include Progressive French Literature A’Level Students’ Book, Progressive French Civilisation A’Level by Ross Steele, published by Jackson Noutchie.
Other textbooks include Progressive French Communication A’Level by Claire Miquel, Progressive Grammar for Adolescent A’Level by Annie Vicar and On y Va 3 Students Book.
Recommended reading books include Progressive French Civilisation For Francophone, Exercises For French Learning, Read and Understand 220 Exercises, and the New Guide of France Civilisation by Michalo Kirmmel.
However, French teachers have expressed concern over the unavailability of most of the new books on the market.
Moses Biguma, a French teacher at Muyenga High School, said the ministry should avail the set books to all French teachers.
Meanwhile, over 15 French teaching schools in Wakiso and Mpigi districts gathered at St Lawrence Paris–Palais over the weekend, to celebrate Francophone Day. Students performed songs and plays, among other activities, all in French.
Presiding over the celebrations, Deus Monday, a senior education officer in the Ministry of Education, called for seriousness on optional subjects. “French is internationally spoken and many French-based institutions are coming up,†said Monday.
Biguma said many schools pay less attention to French, teaching it only once a week. “The French accent is still a problem among students, but it is among the best performed subjects at A’Level. There is a need to teach French in primary schools,†he said.
Some of the schools that attended the Francophone celebrations include Gayaza High School, Kings College Budo, Gombe Secondary School, St. Lawrence Paris-Palais and Muyenga High School.
