THE 2011 elections may be three years away but members of the Uganda Peoples’ Congress (UPC) in Lira district have picked their flag-bearer for the LC5 chairmanship.

The district council speaker, Alex Oremo Alot, was announced on Tuesday as the party candidate by Erute South MP John Odit during a meeting at Adekokowok sub-county.

“Oremo will be the UPC flag-bearer in 2011, to pull down the current LC5 chairman Franco Ojur (independent) from leadership,” he said to thunderous applause from party supporters.

Odit asked them to rally behind Oremo without fear of intimidation.
“We need to oust independent candidates from all elective positions in the district, starting from Local Council One,” Odit said, adding Oremo had shown clean leadership skills right from the days of the late district chairman, Obua Otoa.

“We need leaders with a vision for development and who are not tainted with corruption.”

According to the MP, independents were selfish individuals “who have no agenda for the country but only themselves and should therefore be viewed with suspicion.”
