EDITOR—I am surprised that the recently fixed signposts on the entire stretch of the highway from Kasese to Bwera and the Kasese-Mbarara road have been vandalised!
The roads with no signposts to give motorists and other road users vital information such as sharp corners could put hundreds of lives at risk. The highway passes through Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the last two years, a lion and an elephant have been knocked dead near Katunguru trading centre on the same road.
It is common to see vehicles driving at very high speed through the national park. I once complained to the Kasese Police and I was told that Police suspect scrap metal dealers to be the ones vandalizing the traffic signs.
But if Police officers were not more interested in bribes from motorists, maybe the culprits would have been netted. The Government should regulate the scrap metal trade and know where the metals that are bought are taken and the final products made from them. Boaz Tumusiime Makerere University
