High jumper Okot eyes record

DAVID Okot will have another shot at the national high jump record when he competes at the Kenya track and field trials in Nairobi this weekend. The Makerere University student who equalled Patrick Etolu’s two-meter mark last year, is one of 11 national athletes to compete at Kasarani stadium.

DAVID Okot will have another shot at the national high jump record when he competes at the Kenya track and field trials in Nairobi this weekend. The Makerere University student who equalled Patrick Etolu’s two-meter mark last year, is one of 11 national athletes to compete at Kasarani stadium.

The Nairobi meet offers the Ugandans a last chance to qualify for the Africa Senior Championships due in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on April 30.
The continental championship will offer Uganda sprinters a chance to compete under electronic timing — an IAAF requirement for the Beijing Olympics qualifiers.

The sprinters on the team are Rogers Aheebwa (100m/200m), Waisswa Lukungu (400m), Justine Bayiga (200m/400m), Emilly Nanziri (100m/400m), Jerome Kibira (100m/200m) and Emmanuela Oromo (100m/200m).
0thers are Paskar Owor (1500m), Annet Kabasindi (javelin), Moses Ejobu (long jump) and Timothy Kabuye.
The team sponsored by Busscar Bus company departed yesterday.

+Kenyan Olympic middle-distance hopeful Asbel Kiprop has kick-started his preparations for the Beijing Games with victory in his first race of the season.

The former World Junior Cross Country champion, who came fourth in the 1500m at the world championships last year, sprinted away from compatriot Isaac Sang in the last 50 metres to win the Mauritius International 3,000m race in 8min 21.24sec.
