Over 100 Prisons staff in Kasese district have been indefinitely suspended over allegations that they were recruited irregularly.
In a March 12 letter to the regional Prisons commander, the Commissioner General of Prisons, John Byabashaija, wrote that the suspension followed an investigation into the recruitment exercise, which was conducted in December 2007.
“Enclosed are names of staff found to have been irregularly recruited into the Prisons Service. They are, therefore, suspended from duty with immediate effect pending a substantive decision by the next session of the Prisons Council,†the letter said.
However, the date of the council meeting was not indicated.
In a related development, the district Police commander, Felix Ebong, has said Mwanje, the district Prisons commander, has been arrested in connection with the alleged irregular recruitment.
According to Ebong, Mwanje, who had allegedly gone into hiding, reported to the Police recently.
A source at the district headquarters said the recruits reportedly paid between sh300,000 and sh700,000 to join the force.
Investigations into the matter are still going on, the source added.
