MANUEL Pinto, a former MP for Kakuuto in Rakai district, was a major pillar in Uganda’s democratisation process, President Yoweri Museveni has said.

Pinto, 65, was on Monday run over by a car he was repairing at his home in Muyenga, a city suburb. He died at Nsambya Hospital.
Below is Museveni’s slightly edited eulogy.

“It was with shock that I learnt of the dudden death of Pinto. My sincere condolences go to the family at this most difficult time.

Pinto’s career in Parliament was as significant as the ministerial office he held with distinction. His level of professionalism and sense of duty were very exemplary.

He was the first director of the AIDS commission, whose foundation he very ably laid. His passion for scouting since childhood saw him give distinguished service on local and world committees. He was Uganda’s chief from 2003.

Uganda shall remain indebted to Pinto for his dedicated service in various capacities. His life and his legacy bear witness to his love for his country.”

With great knowledge of and respect for the Constitution, the late Pinto has participated in the great affairs of our country.

A requiem mass for Pinto was held yesterday at Rubaga Cathedral. He will be laid the rest on Saturday at his home in Kakuuto.
