CAR radios are the most stolen items from a car. Reason; the typical car stereo sets in the dashboards are detachable and independent of the main car body.

This makes it easy for thieves to yank them out. However, this can be avoided if one buys an integrated car radio.
With this type of car stereo, the main body of the stereo is fixed in the dashboard of the car. The front panel which completes the stereo is the only detachable unit.

When the front panel is mounted onto the main body; the control means of the panel is electrically connected to the parts of the main body thereby allowing the user to control the main body of the stereo.

Whenever the user leaves their car parked in a place they think is risky, they can remove the front panel and carry it in their pocket.

Once removed, the radio area remains a blank space and the thief who breaks into the car will have nothing to steal.

Varun Shetty a dealer in car stereos says: “One unique advantage of the front panels of these radios is they all have got different locking systems for each radio even if they are of the same make and type. A thief cannot sell such a radio anywhere.”

Geoffrey Akule of Nature Uganda is one of the people whose car radios have been stolen several times. “I have lost one radio after another. But since I got a detachable radio, no thief has broken into my car.”

Denis Katumwa, a car radio technician at The Garage on Dewington Road, Kampala, says one characteristic of detachable radios is that they are shock-proof, take long to wear-out and their output is clear.

Unlike ordinary radios, radios with detachable panels can be bought as a complete set with all their accessories like speakers, sub-woofer and CD changers.

Because it is anti-shock, it does not loose signal and the CD does skip music which normally comes out of vibrations produced by the shock effect.

Shetty says the basic model does not play MP3 but all the advanced ones can play audio and MP3.
The latest can play audio, mp3 and music stored on a USB or an ipod.

Detachable radios are now available in the leading car accessory shops and supermarket.

Their prices ranges from sh150,000 to sh1, 500,000 depending on the type and functions.
