A MALAYSIAN investor has forwarded a proposal to the government to upgrade Nakivubo War Memorial stadium into a modern 35,000 all-seater facility.

The new stadium will have a massive underground parking area, and shopping malls will be built all around it.

State sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi yesterday confirmed that a meeting took place with the investor a fortnight ago.

Bakkabulindi explained that the Malaysian investor has an ambitious plan but consultations with him are still going on.
“ In his development plan, he also talks about including a swimming pool and several indoor facilities, which would boost our sportsmen’s training,” Bakkabulindi said.

The stadium was a gift to Uganda from the British government in memory of those who died in the World War II. It was constructed in 1953.

It currently houses one of Uganda’s oldest boxing and weightlifting gyms, a netball pitch and a soccer field. Until Mandela Stadium Namboole was built, Nakivubo was the biggest sporting arena in the country.

Bakkabulindi ruled out the deal being similar to that which led to the re-location of Shimoni Primary school and Shimoni PTC.

“We will investigate the investor and also ask him to make a deposit before the signing,” Bakkabulindi said.
