SOROTI-The resident district commissioner (RDC), Ben Etonu, has urged members of the newly-created land committees to ensure that Government land is protected from encroachers. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at Soroti county headquarters on Monday, Etonu advised the committee to be impartial when carrying out their work. “Your roles are the determinants of peace in society.†He also castigated those opposing the Land Bill which he said was meant to harmonise relations between tenants and landlords.
Jinja to ordain 13 clergy
JINJA-Busoga Diocese will ordain 13 deacons and priests on Sunday. The Diosecan Bishop, Dr. Michael Kyomya, will preside over the ceremony at Christ’s Cathedral Bugembe. The Diocesan secretary, the Rev. Samuel Egesa, said those to be ordained deacons were two females and four males while two of the seven deacons to be ordained priests were females. He added that under a new policy, anybody interested in joining the church ministry must get theological training.
5-year-old boy drowns
TORORO-A five-year-old boy has drowned in a flooded stream on the Malaba-Koitangiro Road, in Malaba town council. The district officer in charge of crime, Patrick Owor, identified the boy as Peter Mafabi the son of Amos Wamono. Witnesses said Mafabi was playing with his colleagues when the accident occurred.
3 men held over smuggling
TORORO-Three men have appeared in court for allegedly smuggling 15 cartons of Supermatch cigarettes. Rashid Sowedi, Robert Kiisa and Richard Amoit were arrested on April 14 in Boson slums in Tororo municipality. The suspects denied the charges when they appeared before chief magistrate Praff Rutakirwa on Tuesday. They were remanded to Morukatipe Prison till the next hearing on May 12.
