THE late Emmanuel Cardinal Nsubuga loved and cared for people, the secretary of Muteesa I Royal University, Dr. Pellegrino Kibuuka, has said.
He described Nsubuga as a charismatic and visionary leader, who successfully led the Catholic Church.
Kibuuka, who was delivering a lecture in memory of the cardinal at Mapeera Bakateyamba Home in Nalukolongo, Kampala, on Sunday, praised Nsubuga for his acts of charity.
“He always stood with the people and gave them hope during the difficult times that followed the political upheavals of 1966.
“During the war of 1979 and the guerilla uprising of 1981-86, he kept war-displaced people in his Cathedral at Lubaga, fed them and also encouraged his priests to do the same.
“Because of his strong passion for peace, he brokered the peace talks between the Okello Lutwa junta and the NRM leadership in Nairobi,†Kibuuka said.
Kibuuka pointed out that Nsubuga confronted presidents Idi Amin and Milton Obote whenever they violated human rights.
Nsubuga had modest education, but because of his determination and faith in God, was able to accomplish a lot, Kibuuka added.
The university secretary observed that Nsubuga worked for Christian unity and strengthened the institution of the family.
These, Kibuuka said, became strong pillars in establishing peace, national unity and development.
He also praised the cardinal for nurturing leaders like the archbishop of Kampala, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
On his part, Lwanga asked Christians to emulate Nsubuga by helping the poor and the oppressed, and by upholding truth and justice.
Nsubuga was head of the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda and Archbishop of Kampala between 1976 and 1990.
He founded among other institutions, St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary Ggaba, the Good Samaritan Sisters of Nalukolongo and the Brothers of St. Amans.
Nsubuga also invited Pope Paul VI to Uganda in 1969 and built Pope Paul Memorial Community Centre, Ndeeba.
He also built Archbishop Dr. Joseph Kiwanuka Memorial Hotel (Ndeeba) and the Uganda Martyrs’ shrine, Namugongo.
Cardinal Nsubuga, who died in Cologne, Germany, on April 20, 1991, was buried at Mapeera Bakateyamba’s Home.
The Bishop Emeritus of Mbarara, John Baptist Kakubi and the water and environment minister, Maria Mutagamba, attended the memorial lecture.
