SHOPPERS who buy a certain amount of goods are to receive free airtime under a new initiative dubbed Airtime hot spots. The initiative, which will be carried out by K-2 Research, will enable the airtime hot spots raise low sales volumes of goods and services.

“Uganda is a consumer country. Airtime hot spots give Ugandans an opportunity to earn more than just goods and services from their purchases,” Frank Mukunzi, the director, said.
The Hotspots utilise mobile communication technology.

Mukunzi said the seller (supermarket, fuel station and restaurant) would get vouchers with codes. Each voucher carries micro-units of airtime worth say sh250. The shop also gets a signboard that identifies it to operate the hot spot.

“Whenever a customer purchases goods worth say sh10,000, he/she receives a voucher. When the customer accumulates four vouchers, he/she sends the unique codes on the voucher by sms to a given number and receives an airtime access number worth sh1,000 from any mobile network,” Mukunzi explained.

He said the customer does not have to get vouchers from one point.
