KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally competitors have been spared a 10-km dangerous portion in the second and third legs in Mityana this weekend.

On the recommendation of FIA stewards, a loose and consequently too fast 10-km portion has been chopped off the 38-km Kigalama-Tamteco section.

“Because of safety concerns the technical people were uncomfortable with the nature of the section. The first 18-km are so rough and the last 20-km were so fast and tight. There was a high possibility of spinning off the road. The technical staff agreed to cut 10-km off,” event manager Jack Wavamuno explained.

Clerk of course Kisitu Mayanja had earlier this week said he had designed a route that would not break cars.
The previous three editions of the Pearl rally had several cars dropping out due to a rough route.

While many foreign competitors welcomed the decision to eliminate the troublesome portion Emma Katto’s co-driver Moses Matovu was not amused.

“That’s where we were going to beat them. We had already planned for it. Those are the kind of roads used for rallying in Finland. They should have changed it before the route was approved by FIA,” Matovu protested.

After the super special stage at Lubiri yesterday cars will be flagged off at Hotel Africana in Kampala this morning before they head to Mityana where they will traverse 12 sections. The third leg on Sunday will cover six sections.

The second round of the Africa Rally Championship has attracted 25 drivers from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Japan.
Meanwhile, Luke Kagiri adds that Police has set tough rules to be followed by the spectators in Mityana.

They have further deployed throughout the route in a move to ensure that no accidents are caused by the fans.
Andrew Okalabaya, the traffic officer at Mityana police station said fans will not be allowed within in a distance of 50 metres from the main road.

“They will also not be allowed to follow the cars. They must watch from viewing points,” Okalabaya said.

Parents have been advised to leave children home and that livestock must graze 100 metres away from the route.
To alcohol addicts Okalabaya said: “We have no problem with those boozing but they must be away from the road. Whoever is got near the route will be arrested.”
