THE mammoth crowd of rally fans was treated to a spectacular display of skill and machinery at Lubiri. Jon Williams, in a Polo S2000, made a statement of intent with a thrilling inch perfect drive drawing wild cheers from the crowd. The youngster gave his opponents a bloody nose, setting a time five seconds better than Hideaki Miyoshi.
He massacred a field of respectable drivers by more than a second per kilometre, which is an eternity in rallying terms.
Miyoshi beat Katto for second position with a tidy run, though the latter (Katto) could have done better if his car hadn't stalled for eight seconds. Katto looks like a man on a mission because he drove well, suggesting that he was sticking to his game plan.
There was so little to separate between Muna Singh and Riyaz Kurji who were fourth and fifth respectively. But my drivers of the day were the Rally Chicks who came in a respectable sixth with a thrilling display.
Today, I expect EMKA to prevail over Williams because the youngster says he will take it easy as he is vying for the Pirelli Junior championship (for U-27 drivers) which has a big prize of 60,000 euros.
Lubega is a four-time Uganda rally champion and won the Pearl Uganda rally three times. He holds the record for the highest average speed (176-km/h) in the ARC event.
