THEY were at the tournament as debutants and underdogs. But against all odds, Green Hill Academy emerged the boys’ champions of the 15th edition of the national schools basketball championships that climaxed on Friday at Mary Hill High School, Mbarara, with a 55-44 win over St. Michael High School.

At their first ever appearance, the Kampala side went all the way, winning all the pool and second round games.

The title was tilted into their hands when they earned a 31-27 semi-final victory over defending champions King’s College Budo.

Eventual tournament’s MVP Phillip Sebigey, who had destroyed Budo with a triple three pointer, was at it again in the final with 21 points, and Emmanuel Enabu adding 17.

“It was our first time and we knew we had to face many challenges, so the boys were focused,” delighted Green Hill coach Ibrahim Muganzi stated.

St. Michael, who were in the final for the first time, had Abraham Otti top the score chart with 30, while Ronald Mwamba added 11 in their losing effort.

In the girls’ category, Nabisunsa won their 7th title following a record 65-24 thrashing of defending champions Kibuli SS.

Sharlin Kalungi led Nabisunsa’s rampage with 19 points, while Joyce Zalwango, Acheng Chantal and Winnie Anyango shared 30 points.
