My foreskin is tight and sex is painful

May 04, 2008

WHEN your foreskin cannot roll back completely in adulthood, we call this phimosis. The foreskin opening may be tight, a part of it may be too narrow, or the skin connecting the foreskin to the head of the penis (frenulum) is too short, causing pain during sex.

Dear Doctor,
I am 28 years old, but my foreskin cannot roll back. I feel a lot of pain when having sex. I fear circumcision because of my tight work schedule. Is there anything else I can do?
JM

Dear JM,
WHEN your foreskin cannot roll back completely in adulthood, we call this phimosis. The foreskin opening may be tight, a part of it may be too narrow, or the skin connecting the foreskin to the head of the penis (frenulum) is too short, causing pain during sex.

Circumcision removes the tight foreskin and gives you protection against sexually-transmitted diseases.

The following tips could be helpful.
The tight part can be cut through so that the foreskin can be pulled back easily.

The foreskin can be cut on one side along its length so that it no longer forms a circle around the penis.

If the problem is the skin tag (frenulum) or if it is very short, it can be cut.

Using a steroid cream for a few weeks on the foreskin may also help loosen it.
The advantage of cutting on the side of the penis is that it can be done in a short time, causes minimal pain and the wound heals fast.

However, this does not provide protection against sexually-transmitted diseases.

See a surgeon and discuss the possibilities of improving your sex.
